Are You Really a Geek?

So, are you really a geek?

That’s what we’re going to look at today.

I know a lot of you have asked how I define being a geek and a nerd. I’m going to address those two things and more!

The question about being a geek comes to everyone. Sometimes I question it on days that I’m not doing anything particularly geeky.

I don’t really do the things that classify as a “pop culture geek” (one who does cosplays, casual cosplays, LARPs, or catches the latest Marvel movie) all that often.

Do I still call myself a geek? Yes!

Does it really matter whether you’re a geek or not? No, not really. I look at being a geek like NaNoWriMo does. They look at writing in that if you think what you’re writing is a novel then it’s a novel. The point of the challenge is to write 50,000 words in the 30 days of November.

They don’t care what you write as long as you do it!

When it comes to be a geek, you’re really, really obsessed with something. Whether it comes to the category of “geek”, or whether you feel like you’re a geek or not, it doesn’t matter!

What’s the point of whether you fit with the label or not? I interchange calling myself a geek and a nerd all the time. For some people, those are fighting words.

There are different spectrums of geekydom. It could be the TV shows you watch and the books you read. Or it could be the fact that you like sci-fi. Or maybe you liked Star Wars that one time you saw it with a friend. It really doesn’t matter.

So when it comes to asking, “Am I a geek?”, if you’re asking that question you probably are. But does it really matter? No.

Where on the geeky spectrum do you feel you fall? Email me at and tell me.

Does it matter? Do you care?
