31 Days of Sensational Shops - Krmbal

31 Days of Sensational Shops is a month long tour of geeky, fantasy and/or monster-filled shops in December. Please stick around to learn more about today's Sensational Shop!

Today's Sensational Shop is Krmbal - run by Tessa!

Tell us about you - the creator!

I'm Tessa - I've been a graphic designer for apparel for my whole career. I’ve always wanted to take what I’ve learned and what I love about my career working in the apparel industry and design and print my own shirts for a brand dedicated to doing things the right way. I’ve worked my way up through the industry, learning from some amazing designers and outstanding screenprinters. I am admittedly an apparel nerd and I take every opportunity I have to learn about the industry. In doing so, I also learned about the things that go on behind the scenes, stuff I wasn’t very proud that I was a part of. I wanted to feel proud of what I was putting out into the world for people to wear. I wanted to take back my t-shirt! I wanted another option, a BETTER option. So I did it. I struck out, with the support of a lot of people and krmbal was born.

Describe your shop and what you sell

Krmbal is an eco-conscious t-shirt company. We only print on 100% organic cotton t-shirts and I print things that I would want to wear, so a lot of my designs ends up being pretty geeky :) - we also have some art prints, printed on 100% recycled cardstock and some one of a kind, up-cycled items. I make sure to research all of our products and be as transparent as possible in my choices and processes so that Krmbal customers can trust in my eco-conscious choices.

What is your favorite item to make? Why?

The art itself is my favorite part of the Krmbal process. I love getting an idea and shaping into a reality. A lot of refining and changing happens along the way and fitting it with the best color shirts and ink types and/or colors, to make sure the print is special.

How and when did you start your business?

I was working at a big corporation and I didn't have as much creativity in my job that I had had at other jobs in the past. I started Krmbal in July 2012 as a hobby to make things that I loved and share them with other people. I will have just gone full-time with Krmbal (and launching a small graphic design agency under the Krmbal umbrella) in November 2013.

Anything else you would like to add?

(I pronounce it like Crumble)

Oh and we're not handmade, but definitely indie. That's because a lot of chemicals are required in the process to screen print on apparel, which have to be handled in a responsible manner to be sure of their safety, so I work with a responsible printer instead of doing it at home and putting those chemicals down a drain and into our municipal water systems. While I think handmade is important, I think it's more important to be safe and responsible in our creations!
