Sensational Shop Saturday - Soup Kitchen Candles LLC

31 Days of Sensational Shops went so well that Sensational Shop Saturday was created to continue to feature awesome handmade shops!

Today's Sensational Shop is - Soup Kitchen Candles LLC run by Barbara Smith!

Tell us about you - the creator!

I love all things handcrafted & Eco friendly. I love giving old items a 2nd life, and reducing our waste. I also believe in supporting the Made in America movement.

I worked in the finance industry for 20+ years, and while the money was good, it did nothing for my soul. I find such peace and joy in the arts. When I'm not crafting candles, you're likely to find me painting nature on gourds, furniture, fences, or well...anything that doesn't move!

I also love to cook and bake, though my real life cakes and pies don't come out nearly as pretty as my imposter candles (but they always taste good and that's what counts).

Describe your shop and what you sell

We handcraft a variety of soy candles and melting tarts. We have a line of up cycled container candles, poured in a variety of previously enjoyed tin, ceramic, and glass vessels. We also have delicious looking cupcake candles & wax tarts.

All of our ingredients come from Made in America companies (no imported waxes, fragrances, or wicks). We use Organic Soy wax, phthalate & nitro musk free scents, cotton core wicks, and all of our candles are poured in up cycled containers. We hand paint & label each one-so no 2 are exactly alike. We don't use any adhesion or UV chemicals either. I also handcraft all the melting tarts (our mini cupcakes & pies). I'm thankful to have several friends that are pastry chefs-they're always handy with piping tips. You'll see me note some of our candles as being "on the disappointed husbands list"... Mine has learned to ask "is it snacks or a candle?"!

What is your favorite item to make? Why?

I love creating our cupcake candles! Making the embeds (imposter chocolates, cookies, pigs, raspberries, and more), choosing the glitter, and working to get that "should I light it or eat" look for each one!

How and when did you start your business?

We started our little candle company just over a year ago after making them as homemade Christmas gifts. I loved the science & fun of making something I knew someone would use & love. We wanted to give our friends & family gifts that said "I cared enough to make this for you." Now I want to share that with everyone.

Anything else you would like to add?

We always give a portion of our profits to our local soup kitchens, food banks, and animal shelters. The need for assistance (people & critters) is overwhelming & under met. Being able to give back, even when times are tight, is a wonderful gift.

Where can buyers find you?
