31 Days of Sensational Shops - RosaleenDhu Designs

31 Days of Sensational Shops is a month long tour of geeky, fantasy and/or monster-filled shops in December. Please stick around to learn more about today's Sensational Shop!

Today's Sensational Shop is RosaleenDhu Designs - run by Maire Bourke!

Tell us about you - the creator!

I opened my shop to put myself through a Masters program in Library Science. I got the degree, but haven't turned up any jobs in the field yet, so I'm still creating away! When I'm not creating for my shop, I'm LARPing, roleplaying and reading.

Describe your shop and what you sell

My big seller is scarves. They're pretty adorable, since the look like animals draped around your neck.

Of course, I can't do just one thing, so I also make soaps. All the soaps are nerdy or geeky somehow, and I work really hard to match up color, scent and theme.

What is your favorite product to make? Why?

Right now, I adore making scarves out of minky instead of the regular fleece I use. The fleece is soft, but the minky must be made of angel wings and kitten snuggles.

How and when did you start your business?

I was taking art classes, and I kept commenting on how I'd love to get a table to sell my art. My best friend took me at my word, and landed me a table at Anime Expo. I suddenly had 5 months to come up with product, and I wanted to sew, not draw.

We'd already planned to head up to Fanime that year, and it was back when you could actually get a table at con, so we waited until the at-con sales started, and we set up at the table. There were three of us sharing it. I'm pretty sure we all just hoped to break even. I sold nearly every scarf I had, and realized I had a lot of sewing to do in the month I had until Anime Expo.

I've never looked back.

Anything else you would like to add?

It's absolutely terrifying the first time time you get a table to sell your own work, but so completely worth it. Go into it hoping for a profit and expecting to make mistakes you can learn from. And create things that you believe in instead of catering to the market.

Where can we find you online?

Thank you so much for stopping by and meeting Maire Bourke of RosaleenDhu Designs! I'd love to see you tomorrow for another Sensational Shop!
