31 Days of Sensational Shops - Cross Academy Crafts

31 Days of Sensational Shops is a month long tour of geeky, fantasy and/or monster-filled shops in December. Please stick around to learn more about today's Sensational Shop!

Today's Sensational Shop is Cross Academy Crafts - run by Rhianna Jameson!

Tell us about you - the creator!

I started fandom-related work in 2007 when I sold my counted-cross-stitch patches at a local anime convention. From there, I began designing lolita headdresses, painting boxes, and eventually painting tote bags. I've sold at several local anime conventions, but recently started selling online so that people all over can buy some "functional artwork".

Currently, any money I make off of my work is going towards school in some way, be it books, art supplies or tuition (I'm an art education major), and also materials for additional tote bags so I can continue making new ones. After I become a teacher, I would like to keep this going as a kind of side business and have the proceeds go towards supplies in my classroom.

Aside from fanart, I consider myself a painter (that's my concentration in school, anyway!), but I LOVE crafting as well.

Describe your shop and what you sell

My shop mostly has tote bags which are double-sided. The work I do is mainly fanart based on anime, cartoons and sometimes video games and comics, though I've done work of original characters for commissions.

I also have hair clip bows, bumper stickers, t-shirts, earrings, lolita headdresses, postcards, magnets, and much more!

What is your favorite item to make? Why?

I love making everything in my shop! I'm an artist, so I love the creative process - if I didn't, I wouldn't be doing this.

However, I love cutting out fabric to make skirts, backpacks, etc. This is because my cat likes to attack the scissors as I'm cutting! Of course, I'm very careful not to cut her, but it's nice to have a little helper (even if she's actually doing the opposite of helping).

How and when did you start your business?

I started around 2007. I've been cross stitching since I was very young, but always using bought patterns. One day, my mom suggested I design my own - so I did! Soon after, I started painting my grandpa's old cigar boxes (which I painstakingly sanded down), trash bins, and finally tote bags. While I still paint trash bins, I mostly paint tote bags, meaning even if I make two with the same design, every one will be different and unique, though I have also started making t-shirts with iron on transfers, and mass producing postcards and bumper stickers.

Anything else you would like to add?

I'm located in New Jersey, and I attend local conventions around here, although I do want to branch out more someday. If you see me there, say hi!
