31 Days of Sensational Shops - Blind Alley Studios

31 Days of Sensational Shops is a month long tour through geeky, fantasy and/or monster-filled shops in December. Please stick around to learn more about today's Sensational Shop!

Today's Sensational Shop is Blind Alley Studios - run by BLINDMAN!

Tell us about you - the creator!

Blind Alley Studios is composed of two sisters who have been working together to make magic (and art) since pre-K. We officially became a business in the summer of 2009 when we sold our first piece of artwork, and have been on a roll ever since. We have a traditional artist responsible for all drawing and design, and a technical artist responsible for all crafting, printing, production, sewing, etc. We work together on just about everything--with the singular goal of bringing you the best in kitsch!

Describe your shop and what you sell

Because we have two artists who both work hands-on with our products, we have a wide variety of products available with one common theme: customization. We sell everything from traditional art (on paper) to embroidered bags and our spiffy new bath & beauty line. Every product we sell (whether sketches or keychains) can be made-to-order on a commission basis. We believe in our slogan, "Be your own character," and we stock every accessory you could need to write your own story.

What is your favorite item to make? Why?

Because it's where we started, our hearts are really with our traditional art. The first thing we ever sold that made someone smile was a simple sketch commission, but that's had a lasting effect on us. We love making our jewelry and other merchandise too (it's like portable art!), but everything we put out starts as a sketch...one way or another.

How and when did you start your business?

"When" is easier than "how" in this case. It all officially started at an anime convention called Anime MidAtlantic in the early summer of 2009. After years of toying with ideas and possibilities, our traditional artist was bribed into putting a few pieces of art up for auction. We were at first disappointed they didn't sell, but were able to laugh about it after the fact. Neither of us were truly happy with what we had put out and decided that it was a lesson well-learned. We put our heads together and decided that we'd dedicate ourselves into doing the best that we could and putting out products we ourselves loved. The very next summer, we came back with a whole table of art and other fun things to sell. Since then, we've stayed true to that promise and keep making sure we put everything we have into our business. Long story short, the "how" is a whole lot of determination and just as much love (a few long weekends doesn't hurt, either).

Anything else you would like to add?

Be your own character! We'd love to see all of you at conventions in the future.

Where can buyers find you?
